Harini Amarasurya becomes Prime Minister of Sri Lanka: Dissanayake dissolved Parliament 11 months ago as soon as he became President, Parliamentary elections will be held on November 14

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister of the country. Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake had sworn in Harini Amarasooriya as the Prime Minister. President Anura has handed over important ministries like Justice, Education, Health and Investment to Prime Minister Amar Suriya.

Apart from this, Vijitha Harth and Laxman Nipunarachi also took oath as Cabinet Ministers. The Cabinet of Sri Lanka has a total of 4 members including the President and the Prime Minister. This is the smallest cabinet in the history of Sri Lanka.

Harini is the third woman to hold the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Before her, Sirimavo Bandaranaike (3 times) and Chandrika Kumaratunga (1 time) have been the women Prime Ministers of the country. Harini Amarsurya became an MP for the first time in 2020.

Before becoming an MP, Harini was a social worker and a university professor.

President Anura dissolved Parliament Sri Lankan President Dissanayake dissolved Parliament on Tuesday night. Now parliamentary elections will be held in the country on November 14. Before the presidential election, Disnayake had said that he would immediately dissolve Parliament and order by-elections.

The previous Parliament of Sri Lanka was formed in August 2020. That means this Parliament has been dissolved 11 months before the scheduled time.

Both Prime Minister Amarsurya (54) and President Anura are National People's Power (NPP) MPs. The NPP has only 3 seats in Sri Lanka's 225-seat parliament.

Anura also contested the presidential election in 2019. He got only 3% of the votes during this period. Along with the President, Harini Amarasurya also campaigned in these elections.

Anura became the President after counting the votes twice After winning the elections in Sri Lanka, Anura Dissanayake was sworn in as the President on Monday. The ceremony was held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. This is the first time in Sri Lanka that presidential election results have been confirmed in the second round of counting as no candidate received 50% of the votes in the first round of counting.

The votes of the two top candidates in the first phase, Anura Kumara Dissanayake of National People's Power (NPP) and Sajith Premadasa of Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB), were counted a second time. Anura has managed to become President with the help of young voters hoping for change due to the economic crisis of 2022.

Anura defeated incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had been the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for 6 times.

From rebellion to power: Anura relaunched the party 5 years ago and rose to the presidency Anura, who hails from Thambutegama in North Central Province, graduated in science from the University of Kelaniya in Colombo. He joined the JVP in 1987, when the anti-India revolt was at its peak. The party staged two bloody revolts.

Anura became the party chief in 2014. In 2019, JVP changed its name to NPP. Anura visited India in February 2024, changing NPP's perspective towards India.
