Scientists in Switzerland have found a solution to global warming – spraying millions of tons of diamond dust into the Earth's upper atmosphere to help cool the planet. Scientists say we have already reached a tipping point as global temperatures are rising rapidly. This process is called geoengineering. Know the important facts of the experiment…
Why Heroes: Researcher S.K. Diamond particles were most effective at reflecting sunlight and heat, according to Keslin. Could stay in the atmosphere for a long time. Also, being chemically inert, it cannot react to form acid rain.
How it will be possible: The study says that diamond dust will be released into the atmosphere from airplanes. The sun's rays will collide with it and go back into space. This process will prevent the earth from warming.
What the effect will be: Researcher J.A. Dymeka states that releasing 5 million tons of synthetic diamond dust into the atmosphere each year could cool temperatures by 1.6 degrees Celsius over 45 years. This cooling effect can help reduce the adverse effects of climate change such as rising sea levels, intense storms and ecosystem disruption.
Solar radiation modification paves the way: Chief researcher S. The study focused on finding materials to reflect solar radiation from space and prevent it from reaching Earth, Vatoni said. Meanwhile, 3D models were made from calcite, diamond, aluminum, silicon carbide, anatase and rutile. It looked at factors such as light reflectivity, atmospheric residence time of particles and their adhesion to each other during exposure. Diamonds performed best.
Big Challenge: Producing and distributing the quantity of synthetic diamonds required for the process will cost an estimated Rs 16,816 lakh crore. That is double the global economy in 2023. Although the benefits are certain, experts say such a large cost makes the settlement impractical in the immediate future. In addition, the spraying of diamond dust can cause unexpected consequences by interfering with natural processes on a large scale. It can also affect weather systems and rainfall.
Why is diamond dusting more effective than carbon capture… Currently the only process used in practice is CCS (Carbon Capture). Carbon dioxide emitted from industries and power plants is captured at source and deposited below the earth's surface for long-term storage. According to an Oxford University study, the use of CCS will cost Rs 2,520 lakh crore to meet climate targets by 2050. In addition, the availability of secure underground sites to store large amounts of carbon can also be a major challenge.
