Spain's worst floods in 50 years: 95 dead, many missing; 3 days of national mourning declared in the country

This flood in Spain has broken a 28-year record. Earlier in 1996, this type of flood occurred in the country. 87 people died then.

Heavy rains and flash floods have killed 95 people in Spain so far. According to CNN, the city of Valencia is the worst affected. 92 people have died here so far.

Officials say the death toll could rise as many people are still missing. According to the BBC, this is the highest death toll from floods in Spain in 50 years. Earlier in 1973, 150 people died due to floods.

More than 12 inches of rain fell in a few hours in many places in eastern Spain on Wednesday, according to the state weather bureau. An official in Valencia said the city was devastated in just half an hour.

The situation is so bad that the court has been turned into a makeshift mortuary. After this tragedy, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has announced 3 days of national mourning.

Spanish government minister Angel Victor Torres said that we currently do not have data on how many people are missing. Many flood-related videos have gone viral on social media. In this the vehicles have climbed on top of each other. A high-speed train carrying 300 people derailed near Malaga, although rail officials said no one was injured.

More than 1000 personnel are deployed in the relief work More than 1000 army personnel have been deployed for relief work in flood affected areas. Drones are being used to search for missing people, an official said.

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen said she had activated the Copernicus satellite system to help Spanish rescue teams. Apart from this, other European neighbors have also offered to send help.
