Root Can Break Sachin's Test Runs Record: Scored Over 12,000 Runs At 33, Scored 33 Centuries

England batsman Joe Root scored his 33rd career century in the second match of the Test series against Sri Lanka. He played an innings of 143 runs. Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs in Test cricket is already being discussed. Root, who scored 12,131 runs in 144 Tests, is now 3,790 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar. When Sachin retired, his record was considered unbreakable. However, by scoring his 50th ODI century in the ODI World Cup, Virat Kohli showed that this record will be broken as soon as it is made. Joe Root has currently scored 12,131 runs in 144 Tests (up to the first Test against Sri Lanka) at an average of 50.33 and is currently ahead of Sachin at this stage of his career. After 144 Test matches in his career, Sachin had scored 11,532 runs. Sachin ended his career with 15,921 runs in 200 matches. In such a situation, if we assume that Root can extend his career to 200 Test matches and at the current average he scores around 50 runs in each innings, he can break Sachin's record in the next 75 innings i.e. around 38 Test matches. It will be the 182nd Test of his career. Root has a chance to surpass Sachin in the half-century as well. Root has scored 64 half-centuries. He is just 4 fifties away from Sachin's 68. Sachin was 35 at the time of the 144th Test, Root has a chance to break Sachin's record for the most Tests played as well. Root is now 33, while Sachin was 35 at the time of the 144th Test in 2008. Even if Root can play till the age of 39 like Sachin and play 10 Tests every year, he will still be able to play more than 60 Test matches. This is also possible because England plays more Tests every year than any other team. England are playing an average of 11 Tests per year in the current decade. Sachin Tendulkar's century record difficult to break Even though Root is close to breaking Sachin's record for most matches and runs, his record of 51 centuries may be difficult to break. Root is currently on 33 centuries and is averaging a century every 4.5 matches. At this rate, he might have to play 90 matches to overtake Sachin and in that case his career would have to stretch to around 8 years. Root's Fab-4 lead of 2.5 thousand runs In modern Test cricket, the four best batsmen based on technique and performance are colloquially called the Fab-4. Formed in the 2010s, this category includes Joe Root, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli. Root has now outgrown all this. Root has 12,131 runs, while none of the other three have scored even ten thousand runs. Smith is second with 9685 runs and Root is 2446 runs ahead of him. At the current average, a record-breaking 1247 runs in 38 matches could beat all but Sachin's total and then he would become the second most successful batsman in the world. Root is currently in the seventh position for the most runs in Test history.
