Joe Root scores century in Lord's Test: becomes England's highest run-scorer; English team- 358/7 on the first day

The second match of the Test series between England and Sri Lanka is being played at Lord's Stadium in London. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first on Thursday. Joe Root scored his 33rd career century for England on the first day. At the end of the day's play, England scored 358 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. From the side, Gus Atkinson remained unbeaten with Matthew Potts after scoring a fifty. Milan Ratnayake, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara took 2 wickets each for Sri Lanka. Root became the highest run-scorer in England if Root completed 6500 Test runs in England with his 13th run in an innings. He is playing his 77th Test and completed 6500 runs in his 134th innings. Root then went on to score the 33rd century of his Test career to become the highest run scorer in England. Prior to the route, former England captain Alastair Cook had scored 6568 runs in 89 Tests. Root now has 6629 runs to his name. Root also holds the most 20 Test centuries in England. After him, Cook, Ian Bell, Graham Gooch and Kevin Pietersen have scored 15 centuries each in England. Both Root and Cook have 32 half-centuries each in England. Root equaled Cook's century, scoring his 33rd Test century as he completed his century against Sri Lanka. In this regard he equaled Cook, who has only 33 centuries to his name. However, the record for most Test centuries is still 9 batters ahead of him. Sachin Tendulkar is on top in this matter by scoring 51 centuries. Duckett gets out after losing the toss, batting first Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence got off to a cautious start for the English team. However, Lawrence was dismissed for 9, after which captain Olly Pope also returned to the pavilion for just 1 run. Duckett, along with Root, took charge of the team and took the score past 50. Duckett scored 40 and fell victim to Prabhat Jayasuriya and his 40-run partnership with Root was also broken. Prabhath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando took 1 wicket each for Sri Lanka in the first session as Root-Brooke took the team's score close to 100. After 3 wickets fell, Joe Root and Harry Brooke took charge of the team. Both players took the score to 97 by the end of the first session. Brook-Smith out in second session England lost the important wickets of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith in the second session. Brook could score only 33 runs and Smith only 21 runs. Chris Woakes too did not last long after that, caught at fine leg by Lahiru Kumara. Kumara, Milan Ratnayake and Asitha Fernando have taken 2 wickets each. Root Out in Third Session Joe Root was dismissed for 143 in the third session, sharing a 92-run partnership with Gus Atkinson for the 7th wicket. Atkinson continued after his dismissal and put on a 50+ run partnership with Matthew Potts. At the end of the session Atkinson was not out after scoring 74 runs and Potts 20 runs. Prabhath Jayasuriya also got a wicket from Sri Lanka.
