Failed twice in 11th, made fun of in school I am a resident of Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh. As a child I used to dance during Ganapati and Durga Puja. 400 to 500 rupees were received every year. I was very poor in studies. I was beaten a lot for it.
Failed twice in 11th. My juniors were now seniors. I was made fun of at school. The challenge before me was to pass 12th anyway. I worked hard and somehow passed with 57 percent marks.
The family members were not ready to send them out of the house Apart from cricket, I was also fond of dance and acting since childhood. I just couldn't tell this to anyone. My elder brother was sent out to study. I also wanted to move out, but my family wanted something else. He believed that I should stay at home and take care of the business with my father.'
Akshay Kumar-cries after watching Big B's film, then decides to act 'I also sat in the shop with my father for a few days. However, playing guitar was more than working inside the shop. Dad used to get irritated by this. One day I was watching Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar's movie 'Waqt' with my family. The film was based on father-son relationship and acting. I started crying after watching the movie. That day I told everyone that now I will make a career in acting.'
'I told my father that I will not stay at home anymore. Then went to Pune for graduation. Visited FTII (Film and Television Institute) there. Wanted to take admission there. Once I cleared the written test, but fell behind in the audition.'

Then I started working as a ticket seller at INOX (a theater chain). There salary was 3500 rupees. I worked there for 6 months. Every week we got free tickets. Aamir Khan's film 'Rang De Basanti' was released. I went to see that movie. After watching this film, he was so impressed that he quit his job.'
Got admission in Subhash Ghai's acting school, but faced difficulty in paying the fees 'After quitting the job of a ticket seller, the goal now was to somehow get work in films. I had now come to Mumbai. After coming to Mumbai, I came to know that Subhash Ghai runs an acting school called 'Whistling Wood International'. However, I was shocked to hear the fees there. The total fee was Rs 12 lakh.'
'Managing this much money was difficult. At that time my brother helped me a lot. He arranged the money and got me admitted, but we couldn't pay the third semester fees. The situation came to such an extent that the course had to be dropped.
'Somehow this reached Subhash Ghai and Naseeruddin Shah (who were teachers there). I was a bright student of the institution. The management was aware of this. He refused at first, but later waived my fee.'
Whistling Wood is located in International Film City, Mumbai. It is considered among the best acting schools.
He used to go around with a CD cassette in his pocket to get work 'I used to carry CD cassettes with me while taking acting courses. There were some short videos of my performance in that cassette.
'I thought that if I ever meet Subhash Ghai Ji, I will show him a sample of my work. Finally one day came. Subhash Ghai ji and I met in an elevator one day. I gave him my CD and said, Sir, whenever you get time, you must have a look.'
Hearing Subhash Ghai's voice the fever subsided. 'Six months after meeting Subhash Ghai, I got a call from his office. It was said that Subhash Ghai wanted to meet me. I had a fever of 102 degrees that day, but it went away as soon as I heard this. I immediately took an auto and went to his house. Subhashji asked, Anil, do you know Punjabi? I said – yes sir, I can. Then he said- And dance? I said I also like to dance.'
