'Hanuman' director Prashant Verma had already announced that he is going to create a new film universe based on Indian mythology, which will be called Prashant Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). 'Mahakali' is bringing a new superhero character and story to this universe, the first look of which is very powerful. The makers announced the film on Durga Saptami, the main character of which is inspired by Maa Kali.

The story and screenplay of the film is being penned by PVCU creator Prashant himself, while the director will be Pooja Aparna Kolluru. A dark-skinned young actress, whose name is yet to be revealed, will play the role of Maa Kali in the film.
'Mahakali' will break the stereotypes about the beauty of women in Indian cinema and redefine the beauty standards. Although there have been very few superhero projects in Indian cinema, 'Mahakali' will be the first female superhero film in Indian cinema.
