News18 in its article quoted Moradabad Railway Police Deputy Superintendent Anil Kumar Verma as saying that the incident took place on September 18 and that two youths, Sandeep Chauhan and Bijendra alias Tinku, have been arrested in this case. Both are residents of Bilaspur police station area of Rampur district.

During interrogation, both of them said, 'We used to go to the crime spot drinking alcohol. Even on the day of the accident, they were sitting by the track drinking alcohol, when they saw an iron pillar lying there, they thought of stealing it, as soon as they got the chance, they took it away. The ground was rough, we were drunk, then while carrying the pillar we heard a train horn, after which we left the pillar and ran away.

News 18 also quoted the police in their report as saying that the arrested accused have no association with any organization nor are they affiliated with any module. (Click to view archive link)
