The ABCD of Management: Sky and Organization Sirf Illusions

B.N. Dastur year was 1969. US-based management guru Prof. Rishikumar Pandya came to Ahmedabad and conducted a seminar on management at the Chamber of Commerce. He said and I listened. 'The sky is just an illusion, an illusion. It has no personality. Hasti is of moon, sun and stars. They are all 'real', not sky. The organization is just like the sky, an illusion. Only the people working in it are real.' From the time I quit my job in 1980 and became a consultant till today, I got success with the help of these words of Rishikumar sir. Organization is illusion, employees are real. Bhishmapitamah Prof. of Management. Peter Drucker labeled employees 'knowledge workers' and defined management as 'the management of the total knowledge in the minds of the organization's knowledge workers, not the management of people, but the management of people's knowledge.' Unfortunately even today many organizations are holding on to the management principles of Shivaji's time. Like pawns on a business chessboard, managing employees' behavior, not their knowledge, their skills, their experience. Organizations that value the knowledge, skills, experience, talents of their knowledge workers, train them, provide the necessary resources, teach them the process of using each resource, can progress in today's environment. Stop doing random interviews and try the 'Behavioral Interview' technique. Remember that an Arabian horse is better than a stable of donkeys. Talent does not come cheap. Respect and value your knowledge workers. listen to them Whether you like it or not, the fact is that the organization is number three in your priority of knowledge workers. First priority is family, second is career-career. Focus on work-life balance, discuss career with each knowledge worker twice a year. Explain the difference between information and knowledge, efficiency and effectiveness from day one. Create a 'learning' environment in the organization. Keep learning, teaching faster than competitors. Provide regular training to managers to give negative feedback. Put the best knowledge workers on opportunities, not problems. Neutralize viruses like defensive routine, group think, group shift. Emphasize that the exclusion of ethics under the guise of 'profit' and 'loyalty' is prohibited. Appreciate the contribution, sacrifices of employees' families in the progress of the organization. Create a highly effective concierge service. Try this way of connecting the families of knowledge workers with the organization. Need carpenters, electricians, plumbers at home? Want to buy train or airline tickets? Need a doctor? Want movie tickets? Want to book a hotel? Make a phone call to the organization. It is prudent to preserve knowledge workers without worrying about whether the organization is an illusion or not. Wednesday's message is work, anger and greed, the gates of hell. (Bhagavad Gita)
