US President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his desire to become the President for the third time. He made the statement at a hotel in Washington DC before meeting with President Joe Biden on Wednesday, Reuters reported. His supporters expressed happiness on this statement.
Trump told members of the lower house of the US Congress, “I think I will not run for president again. But I can think about it if you want.
In America, there is a provision to become president twice. Trump has been elected as President for the second time. Before this he was the President from 2017 to 2021. If Trump tries to become President for a third time, he will have to amend the Constitution to do so. This will require the support of the US Parliament and the states.
73 years ago, the rule of becoming president twice was made Earlier in America there was no provision that a person could be President only twice. In 1951, 22 amendments were made to the constitution. Under this, a rule was made that a person can be president only twice in America.
In fact, America's first president, George Washington, retired after two terms. Since then, it has become an informal rule for a president to serve no more than two terms. After this it became a tradition in America.
None of the 31 American presidents broke this practice, but Franklin D. This rule was broken during the Roosevelt era. He was elected President four times from 1933 to 1945.
After this, the 1946 presidential election saw the return of the Republican Party. In 1947, the Hoover Commission for Administrative Changes in the Central Government was formed. Following the recommendations of this commission, the 22nd Amendment made it a law that the President could not be elected for more than two terms.
Can Trump change the Constitution? If Trump wants to run for the US presidency for the third time, he will have to change the US constitution, which is not so easy. For this, Trump will have to pass the bill with a two-thirds majority in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives. Trump's Republican Party does not have that many members in either house.
Trump's Republican Party has 52 of the 100 senators in the Senate. The House of Representatives has 220 members out of 435. This is far short of the two-thirds or 67% majority required for a constitutional amendment.
Even if Trump gets this majority, it will not be easy for him to amend the Constitution. After the bill is passed by both houses of the US Congress, the amendment will have to be approved by the states.
For this, the constitution can be amended only after the majority of three-fourths of the states. That means the rules can only be changed if 38 of the 50 US states agree to change the Constitution.
However, the Republican Party has rejected Donald Trump's statement about becoming president for a third term.
Party leader Tim Burchett called Trump's statement a joke. He said that Trump does not want this at all.
