Former US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, September 17, that he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. However, Trump did not give any information about where they will meet. At the same time Trump called Modi a 'fantastic man' despite criticizing India on trade.
Trump targets India, praises Modi
Speaking at a rally in Michigan, Trump described PM Modi as a great person. On the other hand, in the same rally, he called India a 'gross abuser' of trade relations. He talked about the tariff war with the US and China. Notably, US President Joe Biden will organize a summit with the leaders of Australia, India and Japan in Delaware on September 21. Analysts say Washington sees New Delhi as a weapon against China's growing influence in Asia.
Good friendship between PM Modi and Trump
Washington sees New Delhi as an important ally to counter China's growing influence in Asia, but Trump has been attacking India on trade. However, despite criticizing India on trade at Tuesday's rally, he described PM Modi as a wonderful person. Trump and Modi had a good friendship during their tenure as President. When Trump came to India in 2020, PM Modi held a big rally to welcome him in Ahmedabad. The world's largest cricket stadium was inaugurated during this period. People who participated in the rally wore 'Namaste Trump' hats to welcome the US President.
Trump said – if I become the President, I will treat 'like with like'
Donald Trump said that if he wins the election, America will also go tit for tat. If someone imposes an import duty of 10 paise or two dollars or 250 per cent on us, we will collect the same import duty from them. That's how we get back to free trade. Trump has earlier criticized India for imposing heavy import duties on many American products. Even during his last presidential term, Trump made a statement against alleged high import duties imposed by India. Also, during his last tenure, Trump imposed heavy import duties on many Indian products in the US.
PM Modi also has good relations with Biden
A year before this, in 2019, Narendra Modi went to America. Meanwhile, Trump also participated in the 'Howdy Modi' rally in Texas. In the presence of more than 50 thousand people at the rally, the two leaders showered each other with loud praises from the stage. PM Modi also enjoys good relations with Democratic leaders like current President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama. Last year, PM Modi was given a red carpet welcome at the White House during Biden's tenure.
