- An initiative to make the country a tourism hub by 2030
A new chapter of Saudi Arabia's soft diplomacy began with Al-Suwaidi Fest. Saudi Arabia's plans for this year are particularly focused on India. The first phase of the 49-day fest is dedicated to Indian cuisine.
The fest brings together the cultures of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh like a garland. Efforts are being made to bring the society of 29 lakh Indians, 26 lakh Pakistanis and 20 lakh Bangladeshis closer through the fest. Puppets dancing to the beat of Rajasthani dholak, faces relishing panipuri, and a sense of unity is emerging amidst the various dishes. People are seen dancing to Bollywood songs in the fest. The festival is not only a means of entertainment, but also a symbol of the growing harmony between South Asian societies and the changing views of Saudi Arabia.
The fest is also promoting respect for tourist workers. Indian workers in Saudi are no longer confined to blue-collar jobs as before. Now 65% of Indians are appearing in white collar professional roles, which is a big change from earlier. The festival is an important link in Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's vision to make the country a tourism hub by 2030.
