Petrol bomb hurled at Dhaka's Durga pandal: 5 injured in knife attack, police say – Thieves threw bottles to avoid being caught; The incident was caught on CCTV

Police said a petrol bomb was hurled at pandal number 7 of Tantibazar.

A person threw a petrol bomb at the Durga pandal in Tantibazar, Dhaka, Bangladesh on Friday night, but the bomb did not explode. When the people guarding the pandal tried to arrest the person who threw the bomb, some other people came forward and attacked 5 people with knives.

The incident of bomb throwing has been captured on CCTV. As the controversy escalated, the Kotyali police said that the case was related to a theft incident. Nothing like bombing happened here.

Kotyali police station OC Inamul Hasan said some thieves snatched a woman's chain from the pandal around 8 pm. When the people present there stopped the thieves, they attacked 5 people with a knife. The attackers also threw a bottle, but it did not explode, police said.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Detective Police Chief Rezaul Karim Malik admitted that the bottle contained kerosene. He said – the incident took place in mandap number 17 of Tantibazar. A robbery took place in the porch, followed by a knife attack in which 5 people were injured, but a bottle was also thrown in the process. The bomb squad team said the bottle contained kerosene.

The attackers filled a bottle with kerosene and made a petrol bomb.

3 arrested so far

Police said that so far 3 people have been arrested in this case. They have been identified as Akash (23), Hridoy (23) and Jiban (19). Those who sustained knife injuries have been identified as Zantu (45), Mohammed Sagar (38), Mohammed Khokon (35) and Brito (26). The fifth injured person is yet to be identified. All of them are undergoing treatment at Dhaka's Midfort Hospital.

The police had said earlier – if there was a petrol bomb, why didn't the blast happen?

Police had earlier said that if a petrol bomb was thrown at the bottle then why it did not explode. The police admitted that the bottle contained liquid, but that the bottle was thrown to scare people. Thieves wanted people to get scared and take advantage of their fear to run away.
