Godfather of AI-American scientist wins Nobel in Physics: Awarded for developing new technologies related to machine learning, will get Rs 8.90 crore

The Nobel Prize for Physics 2024 has been announced. This year the award was given to Jeffrey E., known as the godfather of AI. Hinton and American scientist John J. Hopefield got it. He received this honor for his development of new techniques related to machine learning based on artificial neurons.

The award was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Both the winners will get an amount of Rs 8.90 crore, which will be shared equally between them.

Earlier on Monday, October 7, Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkon were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. He has been awarded for his discovery of micro RNA (ribonucleic acid). The Nobel Prize distribution will continue till October 14.

Let's go now PhysicsKnow about the Nobel Prize of… On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament. He also bequeathed the largest part of his will to a series of awards, the Nobel Prize. Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physiology, Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economic Sciences.

As per Alfred's wishes, the Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to the person who has made the most important discovery or invention in the field of physics. A total of 119 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded from 1921 to 2023.

No Nobel Prizes in Physics were awarded in 1916, 1931, 1934, 1940-41 and 1942. This decision has been taken by the Nobel Foundation. According to the rules of the Nobel Foundation, if any discovery or discovery does not meet the prescribed criteria, the prize money is reserved until the following year. Fewer Nobel Prizes were awarded during World War-I and II.

India's CV Raman won the Nobel Prize in Physics Sir Chandrashekhar Venkat Raman, one of India's most distinguished scientists, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 1928, CV Raman proved that when a ray of light passes through a transparent material, its wavelength changes. He gave his name to this discovery, which is called the 'Raman effect'. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery.

CV Raman was born on 7 November 1888 in Tiruchirappalli, South India. Raman took the job of Assistant Accountant General in 1907, but science was always his first love. Somehow he reached the laboratory and continued his research. In 1917, he left government service and became a professor of physics at Calcutta University.

Here on 28 February 1928, he married K.S. Krishnan along with other scientists discovered the Raman effect. This is why this day is celebrated as National Science Day in India every year. Raman was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 for his contribution to the field of science.

The Raman effect is still being used in many places. When Chandrayaan-1 announced the presence of water on the Moon, the reason behind it was Raman spectroscopy. Raman effect is also proving to be very useful in forensic science. Now it is easy to know when and how an event happened.
