Frontpage Insights: Finland: Digital devices reduce children's ability to learn, pen-paper mandatory to improve studies

  • Studying with pen and paper improves children's memory

Finland is renowned worldwide for its excellent education model and is often ranked among the top 10 countries in the education sector. A few years ago the use of digital devices was made mandatory in all schools and colleges in Finland. However, digital devices are having a negative impact on children's concentration and learning ability.

In view of this problem, all schools in Rihimaki city will now revert to traditional education. Rihimaki, 70 km from Finland's capital Helenski, has seen a dramatic increase in the use of digital devices in secondary schools over the past 10 years, but schools here have decided to switch to pen and paper.

Maia Kaunonen, an English teacher at Pohjolanarin Middle School, says that children these days spend too much time on screens. For this reason we want the school to be a place where they can find respite from screens. He believes that due to the use of digital devices, children's attention is often distracted and they cannot stay on any task for long. Clinical neuropsychologist Paltopuro says that the average screen time of teenagers in Finland is six hours a day. Excessive screen use has negative effects on children's mental health.

A decline in education results was observed According to education officials in Finland, the education results of children across the country have declined in recent years. For this reason, there will be a break on digital devices in the school. According to teacher Kaunonen, when studying with digital devices, children completed their studies in a hurry.
