Due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka, people are facing floods. 4 people died due to flood. Apart from this many are missing. The dead also include two children. More than 2 lakh people have been affected.
According to news agency PTI, six flights landing at the Colombo airport had to be diverted due to heavy rain and strong winds. Due to the system formed in the Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka is receiving heavy rains. Over 75 mm of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours.
An area of high pressure persists despite continued rain. Also, heavy winds are blowing across the country. According to the Meteorological Department, the rain system is slowly moving towards the northwest, which may turn into a cyclone in future.
Due to the system, strong winds are blowing on the coast.
Fishermen had to return from the beaches due to strong winds. A warning has also been issued regarding their fishing.
Army deployed for relief and rescue The Sri Lankan government has deployed the Army and Navy to deal with the flood situation and evacuate people. Army personnel are distributing food and other essential items to the flood affected people.
On the other hand, police recovered the bodies of 2 of the 6 students who went missing in Ampara district on Tuesday. The missing students were aged between 12 and 16 years. The tractor-trolley they were traveling in got bogged down in the flood waters. However, the tractor driver and 5 other students were rescued from the spot.
Apart from this, rail service has also been stopped in hilly areas due to rain.
Due to the flood, the water level of the dam has risen. Due to which the doors have been opened.
Flood affected people were sent to relief camps According to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center, more than 10,000 people from 3,000 families have been forced to leave their homes due to floods. They are kept in 104 relief camps. The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has issued a landslide alert in 9 provinces of the country.
NBRI issued a statement saying that more than 75 mm of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. If the rains continue, the risk of landslides will increase.
The government has also issued a flood warning for areas around the Kelani River. This warning has been issued till Friday.
