India has given a $100 million treasury bill rollover to Maldives, which is struggling with cash crunch. In Delhi, the Maldivian President thanked India for the US$ 400 million currency swap agreement with India and aid worth Rs 3000 crore. He said- India stands with Maldives in times of need. Maldives is ready to welcome more Indian tourists.
Tensions between India and Maldives increased after Muizzuna became President Tensions between the two countries rose after Muizzzu assumed power in November 2023. Muizzu was demanding the withdrawal of Indian troops from Maldives even before he became President. Muizzou, 45, defeated pro-India candidate Mohammad Solih in the election.
Muizzoo said that if India does not withdraw its army, it will be an affront to the democratic freedom of the Maldivian people. Muizzou termed the presence of Indian troops as a threat to the future of democracy in the Maldives. The presence of another country's army in the country without the approval of the Parliament is against the constitution.
Muizzou was on his first state visit to China. Before this, every President of Maldives used to make his first visit only to India.
