After the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential election, the demand for contraceptives among women has increased. Apart from this, the demand for emergency contraceptives is also increasing rapidly.
According to a report by the American newspaper USA Today, Wisp, the company that makes these drugs, said that between November 5 and 7, sales of emergency contraceptives increased by 1000%. During this period, the number of people buying these drugs increased by 1650%. Apart from this, sales of abortion drugs have also increased by 600%.
In fact, after Trump won the election, women fear that their abortion rights will be tightened.
Trump supported ending abortion rights
In 2022, the US Supreme Court struck down abortion rights. At the time, Trump supported the decision. Now women fear that the arrival of the Trump administration could affect their abortion rights.
A post-poll survey found that more than 50% of women are concerned that they will not have access to safe abortion and related health services. According to the report, women are considering moving to states where abortion laws are easier. Under this they will be able to easily access abortion related services.
Meanwhile, many companies are providing birth control pills to women at home through telemedicine and online services.
Before the election in the United States, women also demonstrated in the capital Washington DC for the right to abortion.
Abortion has been banned many times in American history
Abortion was legal in America until 1880. Abortion drugs were banned in America in 1873. By 1900, abortion was banned in almost all states.
Abortion could be done only when the life of the mother was in danger due to the pregnancy. In the 1960s, women started agitating for their rights. In 1969, Norma McCorvey challenged abortion laws. The case reached the Supreme Court and in 1973 the Supreme Court legalized abortion in the United States.
But on June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned this decision. After this, the constitutional protection afforded to women for abortion also ended. At the time, Trump supported the decision.
