The UAE has suspended the deal to buy 80 Rafale fighter jets from France. According to a report by Iran's Mehr News Agency, the UAE made the decision on Wednesday, August 28, following the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France. The UAE signed an agreement with French aerospace company Dassault in 2021 to buy 80 fighter jets. Their delivery was scheduled for 2027. According to the report, the UAE is now considering ending all military and technical cooperation with France due to Durov's arrest. Actually, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was born in Russia. After founding the social media company Telegram, Durov lived in several countries. He established Telegram's headquarters in Dubai in 2017. During this time he also took the citizenship of UAE. Durov also acquired French citizenship in 2021. UAE to provide consular assistance to Durov Apart from this, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also approached the French authorities to provide consular assistance to Durov. No official statement has yet been issued by France or the UAE in this regard. However, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday, “We are closely monitoring Durov's case. France has made very serious accusations against the CEO of Telegram, even to prove it. Equally serious evidence would be required.” Durov is accused of using Telegram as a means of exchanging child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and promoting organized crime. He was arrested on Saturday (August 24) for not sharing information. According to French law, Durov can be detained for up to 4 days. The judge will then decide whether or not the charges against Durov will be dropped.
