Bangladesh's interim government on Wednesday lifted the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Jamaat-e-Islami is the largest Muslim party in Bangladesh. Hasina's government banned it on August 1. The party opposed the creation of a separate Bangladesh in 1971. He also campaigned against the independence movement. In 2013, the High Court declared the Jamaat-e-Islami party's manifesto a violation of the Constitution. In 2018, the Election Commission canceled the registration of the Jamaat. After this, the party was banned from contesting elections. Most of the senior Jamaat leaders are in jail or hanged for murder, kidnapping, rape and other crimes committed during the 1971 independence movement. Jamaat leaders are accused of promoting fundamentalism and attacking minorities. This party has been calling itself pro-Pakistan. Although the interim government has lifted the ban on him, the ban on him from contesting elections is still in place. Jamaat-e-Islami lawyer Shishir Monir said the party will move the Supreme Court next week to lift the ban on contesting elections. He is also being investigated by the International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh for violence during student protests. Sheikh Hasina established the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in 2010. The tribunal was established in 1971 to investigate violence during the Bangladesh independence movement.
