Movie Marvel: Zeenat Aman Can't Bring Janant In Dev Anand's Life Burnt By A Failed Marriage

Miran Trivedi

Dev Anand was all alone after Phal broke up with actress-singer Suraiya. Meanwhile, he meets beauty queen Kalpana Karthik (Mona Singh) of St. Bede's College in Shimla. Devsaheb's younger brother Chetan Anand cast Mona Singh as an actress and Dev Anand as an actor in Navketan Films' film Baazi in 1951. The big screen name 'Kalpana Karthik' was given by filmmaker-director-screenwriter Chetan Anand. Dev Anand and Kalpana started seeing each other off the sets of 'Baazi'. Both were enjoying each other's company. After the success of 'Baazi', both of them also worked together in the film 'Taxi Driver'. Kalpana's acting was praised from the first film 'Baazi'. After that, he started getting offers from other film banners besides 'Navaketan Films', but Kalpana rejected all these offers. Kalpana Karthik decided to do films with Devsaheb. This decision of his won the heart of Dev Anand. During the shooting of Navketan Films' Taxi Driver, Dev Anand proposed marriage to Kalpana, saying, 'I want to marry you.' Kalpana was already waiting for this moment. He immediately agreed to go round. After this, both of them got married privately during the break of shooting of the film. Between 1951 and 1957, Kalpana appeared in six Navketan Films films, including 'Baazi', 'Andhiyan', 'Humsafar', 'Taxi Driver', 'House No. 44' and 'Nau Do Gyarah' alongside Dev Anand. Both became parents to two children, Sunil and Devina. However, after a few years of marriage, Devsaheb's married life turned sour rather than good. Then the deva-kalpana began to separate. First the girlfriend Suraiya, then the wife Kalpana disappeared from Dev Anand's life. Zeenat Aman became a paradise in Dev Anand's life, burned by a miserable married life. Dev Anand initially approached several actresses for the role of the sister in the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', but all the heroines refused saying that no one wanted to play their sister in the film. Then they were looking for a debutant actress. Meanwhile, Dev Anand's eyes fell on Zeenat Aman at a party. Zeenat's unique outlook caught Dev Anand's eyes. He dumped Zeenat Aman for the film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. Dev and Zeenat grew close during the shooting of this film. Talks of their affair gained momentum. During the silver jubilee celebrations of 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', singer Usha Uthup sang 'Dum Maro Dum…' on stage. Meanwhile, some people lifted Zeenat Aman to the stage and placed her on their shoulders. Dev Anand had a crush on Zeenat Aman, but he also became jealous of Zeenat's sparkling success. Devsaheb believed that Zeenat got success only because of him. However, he later realizes that his belief was wrong, but by the time he realizes this, the love between Dev and Zeenat has evaporated. Zeenat, who was feeling the dryness of love, seemed like a paradise to God Anand, now it seemed like a ravishment. So both the lovebirds got separated. Many women from Suraiya to Tina Munim entered Dev Anand's life, but Devsaheb remained deprived of eternal happiness. In the previous stage, his life became lonely. Dev Anand died of a heart attack on 3 December 2011 in London at the age of 88. Chargesheet, the final film produced and directed by Dev Anand, was released two months after his death, but the film was not a major success. }
