Poland's five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Switek has accepted a one-month doping suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ). The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) gave this information on Thursday night. Iga is the number two player in the women's tennis rankings.
The 23-year-old Igano tested positive for drugs during a tournament in August. ITIA sought clarification from the Polish star. In such a situation, Switek admitted that this happened inadvertently. Iga was taking this over-the-counter drug 'melatonin' for jet lag and sleep problems. ITIA said its level of fault was negligence at worst.
Iga has won five Grand Slams in his career so far. Which includes 4 French Open and US Open titles.
Janic Siner also failed a doping test This is the second recent case of doping in tennis. Earlier, top-ranked Janik Siner failed a test for steroids in March. Iga, 23, tested positive for a small amount of TMZ in an out-of-competition sample taken before the Cincinnati Open on August 12.
Iga won five Grand Slam titles Iga Svitek won his fourth French Open and fifth Grand Slam title overall in May this year. Poland's Iga also won the French Open in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Iga also won the US Open in the year 2022. This year, Iga defeated Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the final of the French Open.
