Sri Lanka 306/3 on first day of Galle Test: Chandimal's century, Mathews and Mendis' fifties; Southee-Phillips 1-1 wicket

The second match of the Test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is also being played in Galle. On the first day of the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat and scored 306 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Dinesh Chandimal scored a century for the team while Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis remained unbeaten after scoring fifties.

Captain Tim Southee and Glenn Phillips took 1 wicket each for New Zealand. While Dimuth Karunaratne was run out after scoring 46 runs. Tomorrow the second day's play will start at 10 am. By winning the first Test, Sri Lanka have maintained a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series.

The score crossed 100 in the first session Sri Lanka chose to bat first, but lost the wicket of Pathum Nisanka in the very first over. Nisanka managed to score only 1 run and was dismissed by the Saudi. From here, Karunaratne partnered with wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal. The duo shared a century partnership and did not let the team down in the first session.

Karunaratne was dismissed in the second session Sri Lanka continued their charge in the second session with a score of 102/1. Karunaratne did not last long and was run out due to poor communication. He hit 4 fours in 109 balls and scored 46 runs. After that, Chandimal along with Angelo Mathews took the team close to 200 runs. Chandimal also completed his century before the end of the second session.

Dinesh Chandimal completed his century in the second session itself.

Mendis's fifty in the third session Sri Lanka started the game with a score of 194/2 in the third session. Chandimal scored 116 runs and was bowled by Glenn Phillips. With this, his 97-run partnership with Mathews was broken. Mathews then combined with Kamindu Mendis to take the team to 306 runs.

By the end of the first day's play, Mathews was unbeaten on 78 and Kamindu was unbeaten on 51. Batters like captain Dhananjay de Silva, Kusal Mendis and Nishan Parris are yet to come from the team.

Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on 78 runs.

Kamindu Mendis set a world record Sri Lankan all-rounder Kamindu Mendis made a world record by scoring a fifty in the second Test. He became the first player in the world to score 50+ in 8 consecutive Tests after his debut. He has 4 centuries and 5 fifties in 13 innings of 8 Tests. Kamindu overtook Pakistan's Saeed Shakeel, who set the record for scoring 50+ in 7 consecutive Tests on debut.
