Former Indian team coach Ravi Shastri and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting have questioned fast bowler Mohammad Shami's injury management. Veteran players of India and Australia said in the ICC review – 'If Mohammad Shami had been included in the team for the last round of the 5-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India's loss would have been huge.'
Australia won the Sydney Test by six wickets to win the series 3-1. At the same time, Team India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years. Shami is trying to recover from an ankle injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Shami's impressive performances for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy (multi-day), Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI) raised hopes of his comeback in the Indian team, but was ruled out by the BCCI medical team. Shami's hopes of a comeback from the Melbourne Test were also dashed due to knee inflammation.
Shastri said- I would have taken him to Australia Former Indian coach Shastri said – 'To be honest, I was very surprised by what was going on in the media, what finally happened to Mohammed Shami.' He said- 'Where is he when it comes to being fit? I don't know how long he has been in NCA (Indian Cricket Academy). There could have been a proper conversation about his condition. If I had to decide I would bring it to Australia. Had he been there we could have turned the results of the Melbourne and Sydney Tests in our favour.'
During Ravi Shastri's tenure, Team India defeated Australia at home in the last series.
Ponting said- I said that Australia will win because Shami is not in the team Former Australia captain Ponting said, 'I really wonder why he was not included in the team in the middle of the series. Even if he had bowled fewer overs, he could have made a difference.'
Ponting said- 'When you initially asked me what the outcome of the series would be (in the last ICC review), I said that Australia would win 3-1, because Shami was not in the Indian team. If Shami, Bumrah and Siraj were in their starting line-up, I think the result would have been different.'
Ricky Ponting has been the captain of Australia's most successful team. He is also doing the commentary.
