PM Modi meets Chess Olympiad winners: Players gift chess boards; Won gold in both categories for the first time in 97 years

Today PM Modi met the players who won gold medals for India in the Chess Olympiad. For the first time in the 97-year history of the Olympiad, India has won gold in both the open and women's categories. All India Chess Federation felicitated the players in Delhi at 7 pm yesterday. Meanwhile, the federation announced Rs 25 lakh each to all the players of the gold winning team.

The Indian women's team consists of D Harika, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Tania Sachdeva and Vantika Agarwal. While from the men's team D. Gukesh, R. Pragyananda, Arjun Arigesi, Vidit Gujrathi and Harikrishna Pantala arrived to meet PM Modi.

India confirmed the gold only after the 10th round In the open category, India secured the first position only after the 10th round, but after the 11th round, the women's team gold was secured. Because the second ranked team of Kazakhstan played a 2-2 draw against America. Due to this, India is first with 19 points and Kazakhstan is second with 18 points. The Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest, Hungary from 10 September.

The Open team went unbeaten in the tournament The open team confirmed the gold by getting 19 points after the 10th round. The team played a draw against Uzbekistan after winning 8 matches in a row. Then in the 10th round, the team won gold by defeating America and in the 11th round, they won the gold medal by defeating Slovenia.

In the last round, India's Gukesh Domraju, R Pragyanand and Arjun Irigasi won their respective matches. While Vidit Santosh Gujarati played a draw and brought the team's score to 3.5. India won the 11th round and got 21 points. While China and America are second with 16 points each.

Arjun won the gold for India in the 10th round of the open category by winning the last match.

The first Chess Olympiad was held in 1927 The first Chess Olympiad was organized in 1924, although it was an unofficial event. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) then began organizing official Chess Olympiads from 1927. The Olympiad was held every year until the 1950s, but was not held during World War II. But from 1950 it started to be held once every 2 years. The 45th Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest, Hungary.
