Koneru Hampi wins World Rapid Chess Championship for second time: defeats Indonesia's Irin Sukhander; Scored 8.5 points out of 11 in the tournament

Hampi has won the World Rapid Chess Championship held in Georgia in the year 2019.

India's Koneru Hampi has won the World Rapid Chess Championship title for the second time. In this tournament played in New York, Hampi defeated Indonesia's Irin Sukhander in the final.

Earlier, Hampi won this championship held in Georgia in the year 2019. The Indian No. 1 player is only the second player after China's Xu Wenjun to win the title more than once. The 37-year-old Hampi finished the tournament with 8.5 points out of 11.

First female player from India to become Hampi Grand Master Hampi was the first Indian woman to win the National Boys title. She is the first woman player from India to become a Grand Master. She is only the second female player to achieve 2600 ELO points. His father Ashok Koneru recognized his talent at the age of 5.

Ashok also played chess. He trained Hampi. Ashoka was a professor. To fulfill his daughter's chess dream, he quit his job and started training Hampi. At age 6 and 7, Hampi won the state championship. After this she became the National Champion of Under-12, 14, 16.

At the same time, India won historic gold medals in the Open and Women's categories at the Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary in September. For the first time in the 97-year history of the Olympiad, India has topped both the categories. India defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5 in the open category of the 11th round. Meanwhile, the women's team defeated Azerbaijan by a margin of 3.5-0.5 in the last round.

Russia's Volodar Murzin won the men's title 18-year-old Volodar Murzin of Russia won the men's title. Murzin is the second youngest player to win the FIDE World Rapid Championship. Before him, Nodirbek Abdusatorov won the title at the age of 17.
