BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced the payment of match fee in IPL on social media platform.
Decision to pay match fee for the first time in 17 years
For the first time in the 17-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), it has been decided to pay match fee to the players. Along with Indian players, foreign players will also be given match fee. Jay Shah announced that this is a new era for our players and IPL.
For example, Gujarat Titans paid their team's opener Sai Sudarshan for a season at Rs. 20 lakhs is paid. If he plays the entire league match of the season, he will now get Rs 1.05 crore along with Rs 20 lakh. That means at the end of the season he will get Rs 1.25 crore from the franchise.
Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudarshan continued to play IPL for 3 years on a base price of 20 lakhs. He has scored 1034 runs in 25 matches.
A team plays 14 league matches in IPL
India's franchise tournament IPL has been played since 2008. The 17th season of the league was played in 2024 between 10 teams, with one team playing 14 matches in the league stage. Including playoff matches, the team also plays 15 to 17 matches.
Players who play all the matches in the league phase will get a match fee of Rs 1.05 crore for 14 matches. Whereas, 1.12 crore rupees will be paid for playing 15 matches, 1.20 crore rupees for playing 16 matches and 1.27 crore rupees for playing 17 matches. That is, if the league's most expensive player Mitchell Starc plays all the matches for KKR, the franchise will pay him Rs 26.03 crore at the end of the season.
Mitchell Starc is the most expensive player in IPL history. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.
Why was this done?
It is believed that this is being done to financially strengthen domestic cricketers who are sold at low prices. Because many teams, after buying local players, play very few matches for them. In such a situation, if a player plays even 2 or 3 matches, apart from his salary, he will get 15 to 22 lakh rupees separately.
However, all players will be paid a match fee. That means millionaire players will also benefit from the match fee, it will motivate the big players to play more matches. Due to which the level of the league will also be maintained.
IPL Winner Prize Rs. 20 crores
In the example we see that if Mitchell Starc plays the whole season he will get Rs 26.03 crores. Which will be Rs 6.03 crore more than the IPL winning prize. In IPL, the winner gets Rs 20 crore and the runner-up gets Rs 13 crore.
