England squad announced for Champions Trophy and India tour: Ben Stokes dropped; Better Joe Root will make a comeback after a year

The England Cricket Board (ECB) announced the squad for the Champions Trophy and India tour on Sunday. All-rounder Ben Stokes is not named in the squad. Batter Jo Root will return to the ODI team after almost a year.

The 15-member squad will be led by Jos Buttler. The England team will tour India from February 22 to January 12. The team will play 5 T-20 and 3 ODI matches against India in this tour. While the schedule of the Champions Trophy has not been announced yet.

Root has been out of the squad since the 2023 World Cup Senior batsman Joe Root was dropped from the ODI squad for the 2023 World Cup in India due to poor form. In this tournament, the team was eliminated from the group stage. Root scored 276 runs at an average of 30.66 in this World Cup.

The 34-year-old Root is currently the number-1 batsman in Tests. He scored 1556 runs in 2024 Tests with 6 centuries. His average during this period has been 55.57. In ODIs, Root scored 666 runs at an average of around 29 in 28 matches played since 2019.

Joe Root scored 3 fifties in the 2023 World Cup.

Test captain Ben Stokes is not named England's star all-rounder Ben Stokes is not named in the squad. Stokes suffered the injury during the third Test against New Zealand earlier this month. He has a hamstring injury. Kiwi team defeated England by 423 runs in this match.

All-rounder Ben Stokes played his last ODI in November 2023 against Pakistan.

First major tournament for Brendon McCullum This will be the first major tournament for England head coach Brendon McCullum. He will be on India's white ball tour for the first time as head coach. Rehan Ahmed has been selected in the squad only for the T20 series against India. While Joe Root will only be a part of the ODI squad.

Archer, Wood and Attinckson three fast bowlers Jofra Archer, who bowled consistently at 150, has returned to the team after injury. While Markuwood was not part of the Test series with New Zealand due to injury. His name is also in the team.

Bowling all-rounder Gus Attinckson, who has not played an ODI since December 2023, has also returned to the squad. While fast bowlers Braden Kars and Saqib Mahmood have been given a chance in the team due to their excellent form.

All-rounder Sam Curran out of the squad There is no place in the squad for T20 World Cup-winning all-rounder Sam Curran in 2022. Reece Toplin has also been sidelined after a series of injuries.

While fast bowler Matthew Potts has also not made it to the team. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid has made the squad as England's main spinner. To support him, the team has part-time spinners Root, Liam Livingston and Jacob Bethel.
