Electric vehicle sales up 25% in 6 months: 8 lakh total vehicles sold, e-cars only up 1.3%

Electric vehicle (EV) sales rose 25% year-on-year in September. Total EV registrations (including all segments) were 1.49 lakh. In September last year, 1.19 lakh EVs were registered. This year this figure was 1.47 lakh. A growth of 19% was recorded in the first half (April-September) of the current financial year. A total of 8.37 lakh EVs were registered during this period.

7.02 lakh vehicles were registered in the same period last year. According to Vahan Portal, sales of electric passenger vehicles (cars and SUVs) stood at 43,120 units in the first six months of the current financial year. 42,550 e-passenger vehicles were sold in the same period last year. Sales rose 8.6% to 22,749 units in the first quarter. Sales in the second quarter fell 6% to 20,141 units.

Two-wheeler EV sales rose 40% in September, selling 88,000

  • In September, sales of electric two-wheelers stood at 88 thousand units. It was 63 thousand units in September 2023 and 87 thousand units in August 2024. That means there was an increase of 40% annually.
  • Ola Electric sold 23,965 units in September, as against 26,928 units in August 2014. Bajaj sold 18,933 units, up from 16,650 in August, helping TVS Motors to the second position.
  • In September, the registration of electric three-wheelers was 54 thousand units. It was 49 thousand units in September 2023 and 52 thousand units in August 2024. That is an increase of 10% annually.

Electricity consumption doubled at country's charging stations

  • In the first quarter of the current financial year, electricity consumption at public charging stations (PCS) of EVs has more than doubled year-on-year. During this period, 17.69 crore units of energy were consumed, which is more than 108% year-on-year.
  • India had 16.82 lakh EVs in 2023-24, which has increased to 45.75 lakh by July 2024. It is estimated that there will be 5 crore EVs in the country by 2030, which could reach a market of Rs 4 lakh crore.
  • There were 1,800 public charging stations in February 2022, which increased to 16,347 in March 2024. To achieve a ratio of one station per 40 EVs, India would need to install 4 lakh stations annually.
  • Total sales (domestic and export) of largest car maker Maruti rose 2% in September. A total of 1,84,727 vehicles were wholesaled. 27,728 cars were exported, up 23% from September last year.
  • SUVs account for 70% of Hyundai's total sales. This is its record for highest SUV sales in a single month. CNG's share was 13.8%.
  • Kia Motors sold a maximum of 5,351 Kia Sonets in September, up 44% from last year.
