iPhone maker Apple to provide 2 lakh direct jobs in India by March next year. 70% of these jobs will be for women. Apple and its suppliers in India have given these figures to the central government. In fact, Apple wants to reduce its dependence on China for manufacturing and focus on India. Apple's contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron (now Tata Electronics) and Pegatron have provided direct jobs to 80,872 people in India. Additionally, suppliers such as Tata Group, Salcomp, Motherson, Foxlink (Tamil Nadu), Sunwoda (Uttar Pradesh), ATL (Haryana) and Jbil (Maharashtra) have together created around 84,000 direct jobs. Vendors and suppliers to provide 1.65 lakh jobs since 2020 Apple's vendors-suppliers have created 1.65 lakh direct jobs in India in 2020 from smartphone PLI (Production Linked Initiative Scheme). Apple is continuously increasing its manufacturing capacity in India. The government estimates that for every direct job created in the electronics industry, three additional jobs are created. This means that the Apple ecosystem could generate 5 to 6 lakh jobs by the end of March. iPhone production is worth ₹1.20 lakh crore iPhones are being manufactured in India since 2017 Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. It has three Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) partners – Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron. After the iPhone SE, the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 were also manufactured in India. Foxconn's plant is in Sriperumbudur near Chennai. Apple is a part of the Government of India's PLI scheme with all three of Apple's contract manufacturers (Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron) receiving a Government of India grant of Rs. 41,000 crore as part of the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI). It is only after this scheme that iPhone production in India has increased. In 2020, the Government of India launched the PLI scheme. Through this scheme, companies from foreign countries get an opportunity to benefit from local production and are also encouraged to do so.
