Question: What is a jumped deposit scam?
Answer- Cyber criminals target UPI users in this scandal. Scammers first deposit a small amount in the user's bank account. After this, the withdrawal request is often sent to return the money. When users accept this request and enter their pin, they fall into the trap of cyber criminals and money is deducted from their bank account.
Question: What did NPCI say about the 'jumped deposit scam'?
Answer- The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said about the 'jumped deposit scam' that UPI users do not need to be unnecessarily panic. Keep in mind that in order to check or make a transaction, the UPI user has to click on the payment request. After this you have to put your UPI pin. Without the UPI pin, no one can withdraw money directly from the account of users. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid of this, but need to be careful and cautious. People fall prey to fraud only when they make a mistake themselves.
Question: What precautions should UPI users take to avoid such a scam?
Answer- A jumped deposit scam is a scam in which scammers try to trust you that they have mistakenly transferred money to your bank account. After this they ask you to send the money back through a phone, email or UPI transaction request.
Scammers often present fake and edited transactions records as evidence. So, if you ever find such a fake withdrawal request, be careful. Never accept any such request. Apart from this, to avoid scams, take some precautions in the graphic below.
Question- Is your UPI ID safe to share with someone?
Answer- Cyber Expert Rahul Mishra says sharing UPI ID is completely safe. It is designed to make online transactions easier and faster. No one can withdraw money from your bank account by sharing only the UPI ID.
This is just a unique ID, which allows anyone to do safe online transactions without sharing a bank account number and IFSC code.
However, the mobile number or email ID is connected to the UPI ID and UPI account, which is sensitive information. Therefore, it should be avoided sharing it on social media. Also, to avoid online fraud, never share your UPI pin, password with anyone.
Question: How can scammers find someone's UPI ID?
Answer- The UPI ID has a mobile number and extension of UPI Provider. When you register your mobile number at unauthorized e-commerce websites, restaurants, malls, parking or other places, cyber criminals take advantage of it. They steal this data. This is easy to crack the UPI ID.
So some things should always be careful. As such-
- Do not share the mobile number and email ID attached to the bank account on any unknown website.
- Avoid sharing mobile numbers registered in a bank account at places like restaurant, mall, parking plot. This can be a threat to your privacy and security.
- Be sure to set the phone lock screen password on UPI apps.
- Regularly check the history of your transaction details.
- Always connect your phone or laptop to a secure Wi-Fi connection.
- Avoid digital transactions through public Wi-Fi installed in restaurants, malls, theaters.
- Check his name and UPI ID exactly before sending money to someone.
- Keep changing your UPI PIN regularly for security.
- Keep your UPI app and phone operating system updated for the latest safety features.
- Use only authentic and reliable UPI apps like Google Pay, Phone Pay, Paytm and BHIM Apps.
