Prayagraj police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested two criminals of a gang of fake marriage certificates. The gang used to create fake marriage certificates of religious institutions. This gang used to charge 5 to 10 thousand rupees for the certificate.
There is a legal age limit for marriage in India. At the time of marriage, the age of the girl should not be less than 18 years and the age of the boy should not be less than 21 years. If either of the two is under age on the date of marriage, then the marriage certificate cannot be obtained in such a situation.
But this gang used to make fake marriage certificate of anyone. Whether the boy or girl was married or unmarried, run away from home or young, all such people were extorted money and given fake marriage certificates. Later this same marriage certificate was used to get protection from court.

In 2006, the Supreme Court made marriage certificates mandatory for validating marriages. The main reason behind this decision was to protect the rights of women.

However, even after that, a person can apply for a marriage certificate at any time within 5 years. But for this special permission has to be taken from the marriage registrar along with late fee.

After this, if no one objects to the marriage for 30 days or there is no dispute, the marriage application is processed and registered after 30 days.
