The central government formed standing committees: the Congress chaired four committees; Rahul Gandhi's place in the Defense Affairs Committee

24 departmental Parliamentary Standing Committees were formed late on Thursday night for the year 2024-25 in the Modi government's third term. Each committee consists of members of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

The Congress had sought the chairmanship of 6 standing committees from the central government, but it has been given the chairmanship of four main panels. It includes committees on foreign affairs, education, agriculture and rural affairs.

Rahul Gandhi has been made a member of the Defense Affairs Committee. Sonia Gandhi's name is not in any committee.

BJP will chair 11 committees. TMC and DMK chaired 2 committees each. JDU, TDP, SP, Shiv Sena (Eknath), NCP (Ajit) have been given the chairmanship of one committee each.

Each departmental Parliamentary Standing Committee has 31 members, of whom 21 are elected from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The tenure of all these committees will be one year.

Example: Congress leader KC Venugopal chairs Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC). This committee Recently came into discussion. There were reports that the PAC may look into the allegations against Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chief Madhabi Puri Buch. The PAC is preparing to question officials of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs in this matter. Butch may be summoned to appear before the PAC by the end of September for an investigation into the matter.
