The Supreme Court has slammed the Delhi government and police for violating court orders in Delhi during Diwali. Taking suo moto action, the court said that the ban on firecrackers in the state can hardly be enforced. The court said that something should be done so that crackers ban orders are not violated during Diwali next year.
Citing media reports, a bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih said strict action like sealing of campuses is needed against violators of the ban.
Regarding this matter, the Supreme Court has sought a response from the Delhi government and the Police Commissioner within a week on the steps taken to enforce the ban on firecrackers. The next hearing will be held on November 14.
On the morning of November 1, Delhi recorded an AQI above 300, prompting anti-smog guns to be fired to get rid of it.
A response was also sought from Punjab-Haryana on stubble During the hearing, the amicus curiae said that during Diwali, incidents of farm fires are very high. A day before Diwali, 160 farms caught fire, while the number rose to 605 on Diwali. The percentage of pollution increased from 10 to about 30.
The bench asked the Punjab and Haryana governments to file their reply by November 14 on the increase in incidents of farm fires and burning of pearls during the last 10 days of October.
The court also said that while filing the affidavit, the Delhi government will also state whether there have been incidents of farm fires within the state.
