Sanjay Malhotra to become RBI's 26th governor: Takes charge on December 11, replacing Shaktikanta Das, who was governor for 6 years

The government has appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will be the 26th Governor of RBI and will replace the current Governor Shaktikanta Das.

Shaktikanta Das was made the Governor on 12 December 2018. Later Shaktikanta Das' tenure was extended for three more years.

Malhotra is counted among PM Narendra Modi's favorite officials In financial matters, Malhotra is counted among the reformist and strong executives. He has experience of working in almost all the departments of Rajasthan. Worked in the Ministry of Finance at the Centre. He is also originally from Rajasthan. Malhotra is counted among PM Narendra Modi's favorite officers.

Shaktikanta Das is a 1980 batch IAS officer Shaktikanta Das is a 1980 batch IAS officer. He is an officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He was the Economic Affairs Secretary till May 2017. He became the 25th Governor of the country. Even when demonetisation took place in November 2016, Das was at the forefront. Das has held various positions for the past 38 years. Das also served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission. Das has represented India in BRICS, International Monetary Fund and SAARC. She is a post graduate from Stephen's College, Delhi.

Das said in the last monetary policy review that we are at a very critical stage and we must ensure that we come out of it. The Reserve Bank estimates that the country's economy will grow at a rate of 9.5% in FY 2022. The country's economy shrank by 7.3% last year.

Who is Sanjay Malhotra? Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Rajasthan cadre. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA.

Demonstrating leadership and excellence in his career spanning over 33 years, Sanjay Malhotra has worked in various sectors including Power, Finance and Taxation, Information Technology, Mines, etc. He is currently Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance. In his previous assignment, he held the post of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

He has vast experience in finance and taxation in state and central government. Under his current assignment, he plays an important role in formulating tax policy in terms of direct and indirect taxes.
