Rape-murder attempt, tribal protests in Telangana's Jainur: stone pelting on religious places, shops blown up; Internet shut down, police imposed curfew

Tribal organizations protested after a case of rape and attempted murder of a 45-year-old tribal woman in Jainur in Kumuram Bhim Asifabad district of Telangana. The demonstration that started on Wednesday (September 4) morning turned into violence between the two groups by afternoon. The police said that the accused and the victim belong to different religions. About 2 thousand protesting tribals attacked the people of the accused community. Stones were pelted at his religious place. Shops were also burnt. In response, people from the accused community also resorted to arson and stone pelting. To tackle the situation, Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) has been invoked in Jainur city. Seeing the worsening situation, the administration has shut down the internet in the area and increased the deployment of police personnel. By Wednesday evening, the Rapid Action Force was called in and a curfew was imposed in the area. Police said that the woman's statement was recorded after she regained consciousness. After this the accused was arrested.
