Monsoon tracker in the country: 5 rivers flood in UP, 5 lakh people affected, schools closed in 3 cities; 2 dead in Bengal, heavy rain alert in MP-Rajasthan

5 lakh people in 21 districts have been affected due to rain in Uttar Pradesh. Yamuna, Ghaghra, Sharda, Sarayu and Ajir rivers are flowing across the danger mark. Schools are closed in Prayagraj, Mirzapur and Etawah today.

In 220 villages of Lakhimpur Khiri and more than 15 villages of Jalaun, Yamuna waters have receded. The Ganga in Varanasi is just 44 cm away from the dreaded mark. 85 ghats and 2000 temples have been submerged.

Due to heavy rains in Nepal, rivers in Bihar have also surged. 76 schools in Diara area have been closed till September 21 due to rise in Ganga water level in Patna. The water level of Jirayan river has also increased in Nalanda.

West Bengal's Birbhum, Bankura, Howrah, Hooghly, North-South 24 Parganas, East-West Medinipur, West Bardhaman districts also have flood-like conditions. Two people have also died in the state in 24 hours.

Alert in 13 states including Madhya Pradesh-Rajasthan More than 24 districts of Madhya Pradesh received heavy rain on Tuesday. The state has received 41 inches of rainfall so far in the monsoon season, which is 10% more than the normal rainfall, the Meteorological Department said today, issuing a heavy rain alert in 22 districts of Rajasthan. Apart from this, heavy rain is likely in 13 states including Madhya Pradesh and Haryana.

Areas around the dam have been kept on alert.

There was heavy rain in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday. There was a traffic jam on the road.

Ghaziabad in UP received heavy rain on Tuesday night.

Rain alert in 7 states on September 19

  • The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Goa on September 19.
  • Rain is likely in some districts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on September 19. The Meteorological Department has also predicted lightning.

This time monsoon will be active for 16 days more than usual

  • Normally, Monsoon starts departing West Rajasthan after September 18, but this time it is likely to remain active for about 16 more days.
  • This means that the country may receive heavy rainfall till the end of September. According to the private weather agency Skymet, rains are likely in October after the departure of monsoon.
  • According to the Meteorological Department, 108 percent or 8 percent more rain has been received so far this monsoon. However, almost a fourth of the country i.e. 185 districts (26%) are under drought conditions.
  • There are 68 districts that have received 60% of the normal rainfall, 19 of which are in Rajasthan alone. The most affected are Uttar Pradesh (30 districts), Bihar (25), Jharkhand (11), Odisha (11), Punjab (15).

Reason for Monsoon to remain active for 16 more days

  • According to the Meteorological Department, a depression has formed over North-West Uttar Pradesh. It is moving towards Uttarakhand. It will also affect some parts of Himachal Pradesh.
  • There is a new low pressure area near South Bangladesh, which will turn into a depression in 2 days. This will be the fourth depression of the season. Due to which there will be rain in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
