Kolkata rape-murder case, junior doctors rally today: strike again after 12 days, say- Mamata government's attitude on security not positive

Junior doctors will hold a rally again on Wednesday regarding the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar College and Hospital in Kolkata. The rally will be held from Kolkata's College Square to Dharmatala.

Junior doctors have resumed strike from October 1. To put pressure on the state government, the work has been completely stopped. Doctors demand that they be given full protection.

Earlier, the junior doctors continued their protest for 42 days from August 10. Returned to work in government hospitals on September 21.

On Monday, the Supreme Court slammed the Mamata government for negligence in the security of hospitals and ordered that CCTV be installed in all hospitals within 15 days.

On August 9, RG Kar went on strike to protest the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Medical College Hospital.

The junior doctor said – Mamata has not acted on the promises made in the meeting

Announcing the strike, one of the protesting junior doctors, Aniket Mahato, said – Mamata government's attitude towards meeting our security demands does not seem positive. Today is the 52nd day. We are still under attack. No effort seems to be being made to fulfill CM Mamata's promises. We are left with no option but to stop work completely from today. The work will be stopped until action is taken by the state government.

Why did the strike start again?

In fact, after the death of a patient on September 27, a case of thrashing of 3 doctors and 3 nurses at Kolkata's Sagar Dutta Hospital came to light. Junior doctors are upset with this incident. Doctors also demonstrated in the hospital. Four doctors protesting in this matter have been detained. Doctors demand that they be given security in hospitals, so that they can perform duty without fear.

The Supreme Court said that all emergency and essential services will continue

In the hearing held in the Supreme Court on September 30, the Bengal government said that resident doctors are not working in the inpatient department and outpatient department. In response to this, the lawyers of the doctors said that the doctors are working in all emergency and essential services. The next hearing of the case will be on October 14. On this day, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has to present the report of the investigation of the National Task Force.

The friction between Mamata and the doctors was going on for 7 days

There was a struggle for 7 days over the visit of doctors and Mamata in Kolkata. After four attempts failed, a meeting of Mamata and a delegation of doctors was held at CM House on September 16. In this meeting, Mamata accepted 3 out of 5 demands of the doctors and asked them to return to work.

On the demand of doctors, the Bengal government removed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal from the post. Manoj Verma took charge in his place. Four more officials of the health department have also been transferred. Apart from this, the posts of 5 more police officers were also changed.

On September 19, the doctors decided to end the strike. The junior doctors said that the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Director of Medical Education and Director of Health Services have been removed on our demand. However, this does not mean that the movement is over. Our demand for the removal of Health Secretary NS Nigam and an end to the culture of intimidation in hospitals continues.
