Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: CBI Says – Police created false documents, tampered with some records; Two days after the incident, Sanjay Roy's clothes were confiscated

The CBI had on September 14 arrested Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal on charges of tampering with evidence in the rape-murder case.

The CBI investigating the August 9 rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has come up with fresh revelations. The agency claimed in the Sealdah court on Wednesday that some false documents related to the rape-murder case were prepared at Tala police station. Some records were also tampered with and altered.

The CBI said that the police was two days late in seizing the clothes and belongings of prime accused Sanjay Roy. Had they been investigated in time, strong evidence could have been found against the accused. The agency has sent the CCTV footage of the police station to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for investigation.

The CBI is now probing any criminal conspiracy between Sanjay Roy, former medical college principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal. The court extended the CBI custody of Sandeep Ghosh and suspended police officer Abhijit Mandal till September 30.

CBI investigation reveals- Ghosh ordered the renovation the day after the incident

A picture of the renovation started near the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on the evening of 13th August.

On September 5, a CBI investigation revealed that the day after the doctor's rape-murder, Sandeep Ghosh had ordered the renovation of a room adjacent to the seminar hall. On August 13, the demolition near the seminar hall had also started.

According to sources, the CBI has received documents which confirm that Sandeep Ghosh had written to the state Public Works Department (PWD) on August 10 to renovate the rooms and toilets adjacent to the seminar hall. This approval letter is also signed by Ghosh.

The PWD staff started renovation of the room adjacent to the seminar hall. However, the students of the college started a massive protest over the matter, due to which the renovation work was halted there.

Investigating officials say the renovation letter shows that Ghosh was in a hurry to get the job done, so the document could help link the rape-murder case and the financial irregularities case at RG Kar College.

Sandeep Ghosh, facing corruption charges, resigned on August 12 Three days after the rape-murder incident, Sandeep Ghosh resigned as principal on August 12, accepting moral responsibility for the incident. However, the CBI detained him on August 16 in connection with corruption in the RG Kar College.

A case of financial irregularities was registered against Ghosh on August 24. The CBI has taken this action on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. Following this, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended the membership of Sandeep Ghosh on 28 August.

CBI probe exposes financial irregularities…

  • Sandeep Ghosh introduced the interview system for appointment of medical house staff. However, there was no panel of hospital interviewers. The final marks of the interview were released before the appointment. Ghosh is also accused of not appointing many qualified trainee doctors.
  • Sandeep Ghosh was stationed at Murshidabad Medical College between 2016 and 2018. Since then he knew Biplav and Suman. Ghosh along with his security guards Biplav and Suman ran a network of corruption.
  • After Ghosh became Principal of RG Kar Medical College, he called Biplab and Suman to Kolkata. He received several tenders for the hospital from both the vendors. Ghosh's guard was also contracting with vendors to sell hospital biomedical vests.
  • Biplab ran many companies including Tara Traders, Baba Loknath, Tiyasha Enterprises. He used to apply for hospital tenders in the name of all these companies. So that there is competition in the market for tenders. In which only one company was getting the tender.
  • The CBI has also found many flaws in the manner in which tenders were awarded to Biplab companies. The CBI said that work order letters were written to several college officials, but these letters were never handed over to them. This means that other officials were not included in the tender process.
  • According to the agency, Ghosh's guard wife Nargis's company Ishaan Cafe got the canteen contract at the hospital. Sandeep Ghosh also returned the non-refundable caution money to the guard's wife's company.
