Jal Jeevan Mission Yojana launched on August 15, 2019 with the objective of providing clean drinking water to every household, while launching the scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to complete it by March 2024.

When the scheme was launched, only 3.24 crore households across the country had access to tap water. Water has been supplied to 15.15 crore rural families in the last 5 years. This is about 78% of the total rural population.

The budget increased from ₹ 3.60 lakh crore to ₹ 8.33 lakh crore

Initially, the budget of this scheme was Rs 3.60 lakh crore. In which the Centre's share was Rs 2.08 lakh crore and the state's share was Rs 1.52 lakh crore. As the mission progressed, the lack of infrastructure in the hinterlands increased the costs. The revised budget increased to Rs. 8.33 lakh crore has happened. This is more than double the estimate. In this, the share of the Center is Rs 4.33 lakh crore and the share of the states is Rs 4.00 lakh crore.

Initially there were areas where there was ground water so the budget requirement was less. The work in other areas is challenging, so more budget is needed. Due to lack of money, the work has slowed down. Agencies are facing difficulty in maintaining supply of materials and workers.
