Violence has once again broken out in Manipur's Jiribam district. Extremists opened fire in a village of Borobekara in Manipur at 5 am on Saturday. Borobekara police said that the militants bombed the village.
A team of police and CRPF reached the spot as soon as the information was received. Firing continues between militants and security forces. Currently, there is no information that anyone has been injured in this attack. The elderly, women and children have been shifted to a safe place.
Borobekara is 30 km from Jiribam town, police said. The area is densely forested and hilly and has seen incidents of firing here before. Earlier on October 18, extremists set fire to a school in Kalinagar Hamar Veng area of Jiribam.
On October 15, 20 MLAs from Maitei, Kuki and Naga communities arrived in Delhi on the invitation of the Union Home Ministry. He was given a resolution of no more violence in Manipur. Violence broke out in Jiribam on Saturday, 4 days after the meeting.

After this everyone gathered in a hall and took a resolution that after today's meeting not a single shot will be fired and no life will be taken in Manipur.
Representatives of all three communities agreed to this. After this the representatives shook hands with each other. According to sources, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Manipur CM N. Biren Singh was not present, but Shah was monitoring the minute-by-minute meeting.
Demand for removal of CM Biren Singh In Manipur, 19 BJP MLAs demanded the removal of Chief Minister Biren Singh. The MLAs wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that this is the only way to stop the violence. Merely deploying security forces will do nothing.
He warned that India's image as a nation would also tarnish if the violence continued for long. Kuki, Maitei and Naga MLAs were also present in this meeting. The signatories to the letter include Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyavrat Singh, Minister Thongam Vishwajit Singh and Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
In this violence that has been going on for 16 months, houses, shops, vehicles have been burnt to ashes in many districts.

The population of Manipur is about 38 lakhs. There are three main communities here. Maitei, Naga and Kuki. Maitei are mostly Hindus. The Nga-Kuki follow Christianity. falls under ST category. They constitute about 50% of the population. The Maitei community dominates the Imphal Valley, which covers about 10% of the state's area. Naga-Kuki constitute about 34 percent of the population. These people live in almost 90% of the state.
How the controversy started: The Maitei community is demanding that they too be given tribal status. The community filed a petition in the Manipur High Court for this. The community's contention was that Manipur had merged with India in 1949. Before that they got only tribal status. Following this, the High Court recommended to the state government that Maitei be included in the Scheduled Tribe (ST).
What is Maitei's argument: The Maitei tribe believes that years ago their kings called the Kukis from Myanmar to fight a war. After that he became a permanent resident. These people cut forests for employment and started opium cultivation. Due to which Manipur has become a triangle of drug smuggling. All this is happening openly. He formed an armed group to fight the Naga people.
Why Naga-Kuki is against: The other two tribes are against giving reservation to Maitei community. They say 40 of the state's 60 assembly seats are already in the Maitei-dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, if Maiteos get reservation in ST category, their rights will be divided.
What are political equations: Out of 60 MLAs in Manipur, 40 MLAs belong to Meitei and 20 MLAs belong to Naga-Kuki tribe. So far only two out of 12 CMs have come from the tribe.

Manipur CM N. Biren Singh's security convoy was attacked. The security convoy was on its way to inspect the preparations ahead of the Chief Minister's meeting in violence-hit Jiribam. When the security convoy reached Kotlen, the militants opened fire, injuring two security personnel, including the driver. The Chief Minister was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.
