CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passes away: Admitted to AIIMS, Delhi due to pneumonia; He breathed his last at the age of 72, the family donated the body to the hospital

Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72. On August 19, he was admitted to Delhi AIIMS due to pneumonia. He was undergoing treatment for 25 days. A statement released by the CPI(M) said that 'Sitaram Yechury suffered from a severe bronchial infection. A team of doctors was treating him. He breathed his last today during treatment. According to news agency PTI, he was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 with high fever, after which he was admitted to the ICU. Yechury also underwent a cataract operation a few days ago. The family has donated Yechury's body to Delhi AIIMS. After the Emergency, he was elected president of the JNU Student Union thrice in one year (1977-78). He was the first president of SFI who was not from Kerala or Bengal. Yechury was elected to the Central Committee of the CPI(M) in 1984. He left SFI in 1986. He was then elected to the Politburo in the Fourteenth Congress in 1992. Yechury was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in July 2005. He was elected as the fifth General Secretary of the CPI(M) on 19 April 2015. In April 2018, he was re-elected as the General Secretary of the CPI(M). In April 2022, Yechury took charge as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) for the third time. Sitaram Yechury was born on August 12, 1952 in Chennai and secured the first rank in the country in the class 12 examination. He grew up in Hyderabad and attended All Saints High School till tenth standard. He reached Delhi during the Telangana agitation of 1969. Yechury took admission in Delhi's President Estate School and secured the All India Rank One in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Higher Secondary Examination. He did his BA in Economics with first rank from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He then did his MA in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He took admission in JNU for Ph.D. However, he could not complete it due to his arrest during the Emergency in 1975. In 2021, 34-year-old son died of Corona. Yechury's wife Seema Chishti is a journalist. Yechury said in an interview that his wife helps him financially. He was first married to Indrani Majumdar, daughter of Veena Majumdar. He has a daughter and a son from this marriage. Yechury's son Ashish passed away on April 22, 2021 at the age of 34 due to Corona.
