CJI DY Chandrachud has said that when the Head of Government meets the Chief Justice of the High Court or the Supreme Court, political maturity is seen in these meetings.
At an event in Mumbai, the CJI said – if we meet the head of the state or the central government, it does not mean that a deal has been made.
The Chief Justice also said, we have to negotiate with the CM of the state, as he gives the budget for the judiciary. Relying only on letters instead of meeting will not work.
This meeting is a sign of political maturity. Never in my career has a Chief Minister said anything about a pending case during a meeting.
The CJI said- the administrative relationship between the court and the government is different from the work of the judiciary. CM or Chief Justice meet each other during festivals or mourning. It does not affect our work.
3 things from CJI's speech…
1. Judges have no time to think
- On questions raised regarding holidays in the court, CJI said- People should understand that judges have a heavy workload. They also need time to think, because their decisions determine the future of society.
- I myself wake up at 3:30 PM and start my work at 6:00 AM. The US Supreme Court disposes of 181 cases a year. When in the Supreme Court of India so many cases are disposed of in a single day. Our Supreme Court disposes of 50,000 cases every year.
2. Responsibility of Collegium shared between State, Center and Judiciary
- Collegium system is a union system. Where responsibilities are shared at various levels between the central government, state government and judiciary. Consensus is reached in this, but sometimes it happens when consensus is not reached.
- In such situation, it is dealt with maturity at various levels of Judiciary and various levels of governments. I want us to be able to build a consensus. Every institution can be improved, but that does not mean that there is something fundamentally wrong with it.
- It is very easy to criticize the institution we have created. There is room for improvement in every organization, but we should not assume that there is something fundamentally wrong. These institutions have been running for 75 years. We should have faith in our democratic system of governance, judiciary is also a part of it.
3. Social media has transformed the judiciary across the world
- Judiciary around the world has changed the delivery of judgments due to social media. However, judges need to be very careful about what they say.
- Judges must use correct language. Social media is good for our society, as it enables users to reach a large section of society.

PM Modi went to CJI's house on September 11 evening. He participated in Ganesh Aarti.
PM Modi attended Ganesh Puja at CJI DY Chandrachud's house on September 11 evening. Modi shared his pictures on X. In the video, CJI was seen welcoming Modi to his home. Modi performed Aarti to Lord Ganesha along with CJI and his family. PM wore Marathi attire. He also wore a Marathi cap.
After PM Modi visited the CJI's house, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said that CJI Chandrachud is hearing the Maharashtra case (Shiva's party name-symbol dispute between the Uddhav and Shinde groups). Looking at his friendly relationship with Modi, we doubt whether we will get justice.
At the same time, on his 74th birthday on September 17, the PM reacted to the controversy in Bhubaneswar. The PM said that when he went to worship Ganesh, the people of the Congress ecosystem got angry. The British who adopted the policy of divide and rule, were disturbed by Ganesh festival.
