CJI Chandrachud's Q&A to AI lawyer: Asked- Is death penalty constitutional in India, AI lawyer said- Yes, but only in heinous crimes

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is retiring on November 10. On Thursday, CJI Chandrachud questioned the lawyer created by artificial intelligence (AI). AI's lawyer answered this with the same expression as a real lawyer would in court.

During the inauguration of the National Judicial Museum and Archive at the Supreme Court, CJI asked AI lawyer- Is the death penalty constitutional in India?

In response to this, the AI lawyer standing in a lawyer's dress first put both his hands on his hands, moved his fingers, made some thoughtful gestures. After this he replied in cross-examination style with both hands open- yes, death penalty is constitutional in India, but it is reserved for very few cases decided by the Supreme Court. There is a provision for such punishment in cases of heinous crimes.

CJI Chandrachud looked at the other judges present and smiled hearing AI Vakil's answer so accurate. A video of CJI and AI Vakil's question and answer has also surfaced.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was also present along with the CJI in the inaugural programme. He will be sworn in as the 51st CJI on November 11.

CJI said- People should know the live experience of court room

  • While inaugurating the National Judicial Museum and Archive, the CJI said that the objects in this new museum reflect the character and importance of the Supreme Court. I want this museum to be a place for the younger generation, where there is constant dialogue.
  • School-college kids and common people, not necessarily lawyers. They come here to breathe the air that we take in every day. This will let common people know the lived experience and importance of work of law, judges and lawyers. I hope that after my retirement the next judge will open the museum for the younger generation as well.
  • This museum is not judge focused. It contains the things that we had in the Constituent Assembly. It also houses items related to the people who framed the constitution. The museum also has items relating to members of the Bar. It is the members of the Bar who have made the Court what it is today through their fearless advocacy.

The bar association boycotted the inauguration of the museum The old Judges Library in the Supreme Court campus has been converted into a new museum. However, the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association boycotted the inauguration ceremony.

The association had earlier passed a resolution opposing the conversion of the old Judges Library into a museum and demanding a new cafeteria at the site. The association said that the existing cafeterias are not adequate to the needs of the lawyers.
