- The present Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud suggested the name
agency | New Delhi Chief Justice (CJI) Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud has recommended the name of senior Supreme Court judge Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. Sources said that the CJI has sent its recommendation to the central government. Chandrachud, who became Chief Justice on November 9, 2022, will end his tenure on November 10. The President appoints the Chief Justice on the advice of the Central Government after the recommendation of the Chief Justice. Justice Sanjeev Khanna became a judge of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019. If he takes over as the 51st CJI on November 11, his tenure will be a little over six months. He will retire on May 13, 2025. Born on 14 May 1960, Sanjeev Khanna studied law from Delhi University. Started practicing law in 1983 by registering with Delhi Bar Council.
Justice Khanna remained on the bench that found electoral bonds illegal, EVMs justified. Justice Khanna became a judge of the Delhi High Court in 2006 and a judge of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019.
- The Supreme Court in its landmark judgment upheld an EVM. He was included in the 5-judge bench. Which declared the election bond as illegal.
- He was also on the bench which upheld the decision to abrogate Article 370.
- Justice Khanna is currently the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Council of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
