The Central Government has on Friday responded to the second letter written by Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This time too, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi has given the answer. He said that in cases like rape there is already a provision of death penalty for the culprit. The Indian Penal Code (BNS) provides for a minimum jail term of 10 years for rape, which may extend to life imprisonment or the death penalty. In such a situation, the central government believes that this law should be properly followed by the states, so that the victims can get justice, but the Mamata government is not taking any action regarding the pending case of POCSO in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a second letter to Prime Minister Modi in 8 days regarding the Kolkata rape-murder case. In which Mamata said that- I wrote a letter on August 22 and demanded to make a law to give strict punishment to rapists, but no response was received from you on such a sensitive issue. Center rejects Mamata's claim The central government has rejected Mamata's claim in which she talked about running 88 fast track courts in the state to deal with cases like rape. Annapurna Devi in another letter said that it is true that 88 fast track courts are running in the state, but it is completely different from the Centre's plan. In which elderly, women, children, land acquisition disputes and cases running for more than five years are heard. In fact, in a letter written to the PM on August 22, Mamata said that 90 rapes are taking place in the country every day. A fast track court should be built. In response to this, Women Development Minister Annapurna Devi wrote a letter to Mamata on 26 August, alleging that most of the 123 fast track courts in Bengal are closed. Then Mamata wrote another letter and talked about opening 88 fast track courts. Mamata said in another letter – 88 fast track courts are functioning in the state Mamata's first letter to the PM said – 90 rapes are happening every day CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Modi – Current data shows that 90 rape cases are happening in the country every day. In most cases the rape victim is killed. This trend is scary. This shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the country. It is our duty to make women feel safe. This requires the central government to enact a strict law, which provides for strict punishment for those who commit such heinous crimes. Such cases should be tried in fast track courts. The trial must be completed within 15 days to ensure speedy justice to the victim. Center's response to Mamata's first letter – Only 11 fast track courts are functioning in Bengal Mamata's first letter was answered by Minister for Women Development and Family Welfare Annapurna Devi on behalf of the Central Government. He said that a total of 123 fast track courts were started in Bengal, but most of them are closed. Apart from this, Annapurna Devi said that the Mamata government is not taking any action regarding the pending case of POCSO in Bengal.
