The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a novel treatment which is designed to stop severe bleeding in a matter of seconds.
TRAUMGEL, made by Cresilon Inc., a Brooklyn-based biotechnology company, is a plant-based hydrogel that comes in a prefilled syringe, according to a press release.
First responders, paramedics and combat medics can use the gel to quickly stop severe blood loss from wounds caused by gunshots, stabbings or other traumatic events.

Joe Landolina, CEO and co-founder of Cresilon, invented the gel in his dorm room when he was 17 and studying chemistry and bioengineering at New York University.
There are currently many gauzes, powders and sponges used to stop bleeding, but they have limitations, according to Landolina.
TRAUMGEL, which has “the color and texture of hummus,” works by instantly creating a mechanical barrier against bleeding at the wound site, Landolina said.

“This barrier then allows the patient to rapidly produce their own natural clot that is not incorporated into TRAUMGEL, allowing TRAUMGEL to be removed without disturbing the clot.”
The gel must be removed within 24 hours.
“The advantages are that it is plant-based and works very quickly without much protocol or preparation,” he said.
“Plus, it can be injected with a syringe so it reaches every corner and doesn't require external pressure.”
Severe blood loss from traumatic wounds can kill within minutes and is responsible for more than 35% of all injuries. prehospital deathsas studies show.
Up to 60% of deaths from hemorrhage occur within the first three hours after injury.
The product is scheduled to launch in the United States in late 2024, according to the company.
Cresilon will focus on the US Armytrauma hospitals, emergency medical services (EMS) agencies and medical professionals who treat traumatic injuries, the company says.
