Actress Uma Dasgupta, who appeared in Satyajit Ray's 1955 film Pather Panchali, has died at the age of 84. The actress was fighting cancer for a long time. He breathed his last in a hospital in Kolkata.
Uma Dasgupta's death has been confirmed by her relative and actor Chiranjeet Chakraborty. The veteran actress suffering from cancer was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata for the past few days.
Trinamool Congress leader and Bengali writer Kunal Ghosh paid tribute to Uma through a social media post. He wrote in a Facebook post that Pather Panchali's Durga has now disappeared.
Uma Dasgupta is known for Satyajit Ray's film 'Pather Panchali'. She played the best role of Durga Roy in this film. In fact, the headmaster of Umani's school was a friend of then famous filmmaker Satyajit Ray. When Satyajit Ray asked his headmaster friend to suggest a girl to act in a film, he took Uma's name and thus Uma's connection with films was established. However, after this, Uma Chand remained a part of art films only. He was never associated with mainstream cinema. The film 'Pather Panchali' was based on Bibhuti Bhushan's novel of the same name.
Bengali film 'Pather Panchali' is highly praised in the cinema world. Kishore Kumar liked this Bengali film so much that he happily gave 5 thousand rupees to Satyajit Ray. Few people know that Kishore Kumar's wife Ruma and Satyajit Ray are distant relatives.
