Neelam Kothari recently spoke about her first marriage and divorce. She said that after marriage, she was asked to change her name, give up non-veg food and wear Indian clothes. Neelam said, 'I was told to wear Indian clothes, eat non-vegetarian food and give up alcohol. I agree with everything.
I was also asked to change my name and I did. Many people do this. But, should I change my identity? This is something I did not agree with. I had reached a point where I began to question myself as to how I could allow this to happen.
Neelam had her first marriage in 2000 Neelam married UK-based businessman Rishi Sethia in 2000. However, they got divorced after some time. Then in 2011 she married Sameer Soni. In 2013, they adopted a daughter Ahana.
When the daughter came to know that Neelam was divorced Neelam continued, 'One day I came back from work and Ahana was with her friends. Usually Ahana was always jumping, playing and shouting. But that day she was very silent. Ahana came to me and said- Mom, you never told me that you got divorced.
I was almost stunned after hearing this. I became completely silent. I had no words.
I asked Ahana how did you know all this? He said – you are a celebrity. This is why me and my friends were googling you. The first thing that came up was that you are divorced. You are married again.
Neelam said that she did not want her daughter to know about her first marriage like this.
