One of the most iconic singers of Indian cinema, Mohammad Rafi was recently honored at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. During the session titled 'Aasmaan Se Aya Farishta – A Tribute to Mohammad Rafi – King of Melody', singer Sonu Nigam spoke to Mohammad. Talked about Rafi's versatility and unique artistry. Sonu said that Rafi used to match his voice and style with the actors. Each actor fit their voice.
Sonu Nigam said, “This guy sings 'Hum Kale Hain To Kya Hua Dilwale Hain' and also sings 'Sir Jo Tera Chakraye Ya Dil Duba Jaye'. His voice also graced Dilip Kumar, Johnnie Walker, Mehmood and Rishi Kapoor. Sonu said that Rafi's voice complements the various personalities on screen. Highlighting his versatility, Sonu also commented on Rafi's ability to transform while performing devotional songs.
'Mohammed Rafi sounded like a true Hindu while singing' Sonu Nigam said, “When they sing bhajans, it feels like a true Hindu is singing. He is a Muslim praying man. How do they convert while singing?” Sonu marvels at Rafi's amazing artistic ability to express any style or emotion. 'This is a big deal, not everyone can do this.'
'Muhammad Rafi cannot be confronted' Sonu Nigam continued, “I know many singers who can sing Sufi songs very well, but cannot sing any bhajans. He (Md. Rafi) used to sing for Ramzan, Rakshabandhan, he used to sing happy songs, sad songs, even the most famous Happy Birthday song. There is nothing that He has not done. What a wonderful man he was? It was a volcano that erupted only at Mike.”
'Mohammed Rafi gave voice to these songs' It is noteworthy that Mohammad Rafi has lent his voice to many songs including 'Aaj Mausam Bada Baiman Hai', 'Ahsaan Tera Hoga Muz Par', 'Akele Akele Kahan Ja Rahe Ho'. At the same event, Shahid Rafi, son of the late veteran singer, also announced the biopic of Mohammad Rafi, which will be directed by 'Oh My God' director Umesh Shukla.
